Do You Need Fire Extinguishers in Your Home?

Absolutely. No matter how many alarms and sprinklers you may have, fires happen every day. By having fire extinguishers in your kitchen, garage, and other locations around your home, you can stop an accidental fire before it can do serious damage. You remember from elementary school science class, fires must have each of three elements; fuel, oxygen and heat, in order to burn. Today’s fire extinguishers come in three basic kinds. Each type is designed to stop the flames by taking away one or more of the elements a fire needs to burn.

  • Water Extinguishers – These extinguishers use regular tap water and pressurized air to spray the flames, removing heat.
  • Dry Chemical Extinguishers – These devices use foam or powders like bicarbonate of soda, baking soda, to coat the fuel which separates it from its oxygen source, thereby smothering the fire.
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extinguishers – Carbon Dioxide is a non-flammable gas which is also heavier than oxygen. Devices of this kind spray highly pressurized CO2 gas on the flames. Because the gas is so cold, and heavier than oxygen, CO2 separates the fuel from the flames eliminating the heat at the same time.

Care and Maintenance is Critical

Just as a fire alarm system with a dead battery won’t save your family when a fire breaks out in the middle of the night, neither will an improperly maintained fire extinguisher suppress flames. It is essential that these devices be regularly inspected and maintained. That’s where we come in. Fuller Fire and Safety has been engaged in the business of home inspections, fire suppression, and maintenance of safety systems for nearly half of the past century. The Columbus, GA area is much safer because we’re here to sell, regularly inspect and service your fire extinguishers in order to keep you and yours safe in the event of an accidental fire.

The safety of your family and your home should never be taken for granted. In a matter of moments, these precious assets can be taken forever from you if the safety systems to protect them are not in place. Call Fuller Fire and Safety to schedule a home safety inspection today.
